Work 2020 research highlights
As part of our investigation into the future of work, we have found some fascinating predictions about what kinds of work we'll be doing in the next decade and how work might be organized.

    Contingent workforce growing
We've seen a trend towards an increasingly freelance workforce – one made up of temps, day laborers, independent contractors and the self-employed. Already nearly a third of the US workforce fit this category. An article in last week's Boston Globe, "The end of the office . . . and the future of work," explored the growth of the contingent workforce and described how work is being reorganized. One example: A Boston-based company called txteagle, soon to the largest employer in Kenya, hires people to do tasks that take just a few minutes and pay pennies. Posted jobs (maybe these should be called "joblets") are scanned by cellphone, and the finished work is sent by phone as well. Other examples of new ways to organize work include online job marketplaces and guilds. Check our summary for more on this trend.
