More news and information from our June symposium, Social Media and New Ways of Working

  • Recommended viewing: Using social media for research
Susan Stirling suggested a video of a talk at the Design Research Conference on using social media and online platforms for research. Researchers describe the shift from field work to “web work” where online research platforms and tools like Flip cameras help researchers be “everywhere at the same time.” Such tools allow them to instantly review data collected remotely and “have intimate contact with participants while miles apart.”

Featured article: PEW study - 2020: The future of social relations
Social networking should reduce friction between human beings worldwide by 2020, but the technology could also rob people of face-to-face relationships and foster shallower relationships, according to a new survey of top tech leaders and experts. The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center conducted the study. Researchers interviewed nearly 900 key people and identified several trends. For example, they predict that geography will no longer be an obstacle to making and maintaining human connections and that, for the most part, the Internet will promote richer social relations. New study shows US Feds lagging in flex work
The Partnership for Public Service and Booz Allen Hamilton released a report on the state of federal government flexible work arrangements. Researchers found that “the federal government, once a leader in teleworking and other work flexibilities, has clearly lost its momentum and, to its detriment, is significantly underutilizing some of these important tools.” The study concludes that the majority of federal agencies “are missing out on the opportunity to reap savings on real estate, infrastructure, basic operating costs and energy usage, and to improve their business processes and increase productivity.”
